Thank You

Alhamdulillah - the first talk in the STMWS Walk With Me series ended on a high note last Saturday, on 7 Mar 09 at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business at SMU.

The three speakers - Idris, Shabir and Aaron - enthralled the participants during a 2-hour sharing session on the teaching profession, the media industry and the public service. The lively and insightful Q-and-A/discussion was peppered with moments of reflection, advice and a lot of humour. Do watch out for photos of the event, coming soon - check back on this site in a few days.

Participants from various tertiary institutes thoroughly enjoyed the session, and brought back with them quite a number of learning points -

1. Have passion for the job - any job requires sufficient passion to do it properly and for a long enough time.

2. Have the right attitude for the job - whatever the job is, having the right attitude and work ethics will ensure that you stay on the job longer and that you learn as much as possible on the job.

3. Have an open mind and be willing to do "out of the ordinary" work - don't be fixated with a specific job in mind and be only prepared to do that. In a fast-changing world, in most industries, jobs rapidly change and you must be prepared to re-learn, change your skill sets accordingly and do different job types to advance up the ladder.

4. Networking brings you opportunities - next time you go to an event, make sure you make new friends and make sure they know you and your talents. You'll never know which of these friends might end up helping you to land a job!

Some useful links that were mentioned at the talk have been hyperlinked on this blog, at the right-most column.

The organisers would like to thank the speakers for their time and energy, the helping crew and everyone else who helped in one way or another to make this event a tremendous success. Jazakallah khair!
